Champions League Review 10 December 2015, 10:00 Olivier Giroud was Arsenal's hero as the Gunners and Chelsea succeeded on Wednesday where Manchester United failed a day earlier to advance to the draw for the last 16 of the Champions League. >>>Tuesday Action Review The London clubs celebrated on the final night of group stage action as Roma, Dynamo Kiev and the Belgian underdogs Gent also secured their places in the knockout phase. Arsenal had needed to overturn a 3-2 defeat at home to Olympiakos earlier in the season when they faced the Greek champions away in a Group F showdown. Elsewhere, Roma advanced as runners-up in Group E despite a dreary 0-0 draw at home to BATE Borisov in the Italian capital. That was because Bayer Leverkusen could only draw 1-1 at home to group winners and defending European champions Barcelona in Germany, unable to find the winner they needed after the in-form Javier Hernandez cancelled out Lionel Messi's opener. Group E Bayer Leverkusen 1-1 Barcelona Bayer Leverkusen bowed out of the Champions League on Wednesday despite holding a weakened Barcelona side, led by goal-scorer Lionel Messi, to a 1-1 draw. The Argentinian superstar gave Barca the lead at the BayArena with a trademark early goal which was cancelled out by Javier Hernandez's 14th for Leverkusen in all competitions this season. Roma 0-0 BATE Borisov Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was the hero as unconvincing Roma sneaked into the last 16 of the Champions League with a scoreless draw at home to BATE Borisov. On-loan Arsenal 'keeper Szczesny has claimed throughout this season he aims to return to the Emirates. And on this performance the Pole may have just convinced Gunners boss Arsene Wenger of his value after denying BATE on two clear chances in a dramatic second half at the Stadio Olimpico. >>>VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS Group F Olympiacos 0-3 Arsenal Olivier Giroud grabbed a superb hat-trick as Arsenal crushed Olympiakos Piraeus 3-0 to book their spot in the Champions League's last 16 with a classy demolition job that ended the hopes of their Greek opponents. With Arsenal needing an emphatic victory to make it out of Group F, France forward Giroud produced a high-calibre display of finishing to ensure the English club finished second, level on nine points with Olympiakos, but ahead by virtue of their better head-to-head record. >>>VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS Dinamo Zagreb 0-2 Bayern Munich Bayern Munich eased into the Champions League's last 16 after a second-half double by top scorer Robert Lewandowski gave them a 2-0 win at Dinamo Zagreb in their Group F match. Bayern, who had already secured top spot in the group, finished with 15 points from six games, six ahead of Arsenal, who booked their berth with a 3-0 win at Olympiakos Piraeus. >>>VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS Group G Chelsea 2-0 Porto Jose Mourinho's Chelsea earned much-needed relief from their domestic woes, beating his former club Porto 2-0 in London to top Champions League Group G. An 12th minute own goal which rebounded off Ivan Marcano under pressure from Diego Costa and a well-worked second half strike from Brazilian winger Willian ensured victory for the struggling English champions and sent Porto into the Europa League. >>>VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS Dynamo Kyiv 1-0 Maccabi Tel-Aviv A goal by midfielder Denis Garmash put Ukraine's reigning champions Dynamo Kiev into the Champions League last 16 with a 1-0 home win over Maccabi Tel-Aviv in Kiev. The narrow win behind closed doors lifted the capital club up into second, two points behind the English side Chelsea, who won Group G after beating Porto 2-0. Group H Gent 2-1 Zenit Debutants Gent became only the second Belgian side to advance to the Champions League knockout phase when they ended Zenit St Petersburg's 100 percent record in Group H with a dramatic 2-1 win. Danijel Milicevic scored a left-footed winner 12 minutes from time to secure the points for Ghent after Laurent Depoitre had them ahead at halftime, only for Artem Dzyuba to equalise in the 65th minute. Valencia 0-2 Lyon Gary Neville endured a dispiriting start to life as a head coach when the former England defender's Valencia side lost 2-0 at home to Olympique Lyonnais on Wednesday to exit the Champions League. Maxwell Cornet put Lyon in front eight minutes before the break and Alexandre Lacazette sealed all three points for the French side in the 76th minute with a solo breakaway effort. Gent's 2-1 win over Group H leaders Zenit St Petersburg meant even a win would not have been enough for Valencia to advance to the last 16.
